1.

He felt the urgency to clear the ground. He needed to reasure himself, even if he wanted nothing more than look around and fail to see anything at all in the darkness that engulfed him; and he would have succeed, if this were not the aftermath of a horrifying nightmare.

It was too bad however, that they were locked out in a basement. The nauseating stench of blood mixed with sweat, alcohol and, worst of all, demons—such a strong odor— had his stomach doing acrobatics, the fading adrenaline doing its part as well.

He tried to gently scrub off the dried blood on Ryo's face. If there was any god out there, he’d thank them for not letting his best friend die amidst the chaos. Akira had been so terrified of losing him, he had so little to lose and yet even his friend could have been taken away from him, the thought made him force down the bile that threatened to escape his throat. The blood was now gone from his pale cheeks, red marks adorning them now instead, as Akira had gone overboard scrubbing the filth away.

A weak whimper left his mouth as everything started to sink in.

2.

Spider threads caught at her face, a sign that no-one had been in this room yet, at least not for a while.

'Was there really such a place as the Asuka’s mansion?'

The thought had crossed her mind a few times, yet the answer was not at all what she had expected—nor wanted, but a lot more confusing.

Everything was either broken or trashed around. Was here where Akira’s best friend lived?

'Such a terrible place to be alone in…' the thought crossed her mind, but her heart couldn't decide whether the thought was directed at herself or the blond boy. How complicated, a sigh left her lips.

She had come looking for Akira but found not a single trace of him— or the Asuka kid for the matter. Roaming some more through the rooms and corridors, she found what appeared to be the blond’s bedroom. It was certainly more well kept, but it looked as impersonal as the rest of the residence, if not for the pointed lack of spider webs Miki would have guessed it was as abandoned as the rest of the residence.

A burning candle sat by the desk, already half consumed. With a frown, Miki blew it off, considering that sunlight still reached the room through the windows and an unattended candle was surely a fire hazard. Looking around she found a photo album of the Asuka family.

...was that really Ryo Asuka?

A terrible sense of foreboding made its way to the pits of her stomach as she dusted off the book in her slightly trembling hands.

3.

They couldn't be allowed to fight.

He had to think of a way to stop them.

Akira looked nervously between the two people who were the most important to him. What should he do? Miki stood her ground as she leered at Ryo, and he—

He looked nothing short of taking out a bowie knife, again

What would he do with those two? A sigh left him as he got between them to break up any upcoming confrontation, he suggested going back to take care of the rabbits, it had been at least a week after the whole... incident; but he still felt attached to the fluffy animals even if he was no longer a mere human.

4.

He wasn't particularly interested in going out tonight, and what an odd night it was, but he couldnt bring himself to say no to his best friend. It felt like denying him was wrong at times.

Weird.

He briefly glanced at the night sky, when had they become best friends? Or friends for record. The memories were always hazy, but the rightness of it would not go away, for the lack of a better word.

“Akira, you’re not paying attention to me, are you?” the blond's voice managed to sound equal parts annoyed and amused.

Was that even possible?

The aforementioned boy jolted up in his steps. It didn't matter that he was taller now, he doubted there would ever be a time were he stopped feeling ashamed when Ryo chastised him.

He didn’t even register that they were at the beach. Hadn't they been walking on asphalt a couple minutes ago? Just how long did he space out for? Akira grinned sheepishly as an apology.

“Hurry up!” Ryo called out cheekily as he shoved him from behind, a secretive smile adorning his lips.

5.

It was time.

She’d fought against it for so long, clenching her claws as the rain soaked her feathers, weighting down her wings. Was Amon really dead?

No...

Dead was not the right word, it just didn't feel right. He was just imprisoned inside that… that filthy human being. If she sliced him, would Amon come back to her?

Or would he vanish into the night and then the air? Focus Sirene!

Even if it meant killing her beloved Amon... she bit down on her tongue, even then she would still carry out Satan’s orders. Everything for the greater good, for them to claim back this planet.

Taking flight, she let her wonders and regrets be washed away by the rain.

6.

He watched, helpless, as the door closed behind her. He knew he should feel relieved that Miki and Ryo were willing to talk their problems out (or so he assumed), but why must he be left out? Akira could just not figure out why they seemed to dislike each other so much. Ryo always recriminated him when he’d go back to the Makimura’s residence, and in turn, Miki would always comment on how good-looking his friend was with a sneer on her face. Suddenly exhausted, he ran his palms down his face as he all but threw himself on the closest sofa. He didnt know when he had drifted off, but when the door slammed open he was only greeted by Ryo's smug voice.

“We’ve reached an agreement,” Ryo announced,

“We’re sharing!” Miki grinned.

He didn't know what they were talking about. At all. Nor would he ever find out, as the clock's incesant alarm woke him up to one of the worst headaches he's ever had since becoming Devilman.

7.

“Is there something you want to tell me, son?” Professor Asuka said between puffs of smoke. Research papers still in his hands, shuffling and making noise as he re-read them. Ryo took a seat next to him, supporting his face on his palms as he attentively watched his father.

“Not really, father” he replied. But paused for a bit, which looked a lot like hesitation to professor Asuka as he quickly sent a glance towards his son's face.

“I was just bored," Ryo added after a bit, wondering if he sounded a bit childish considering his father was quite busy at the moment.

The older man raised his eyebrows, setting down his research before flicking the ash from his cigarette, guilt slowly crawling into his heart.

With a bitter smile he exhaled, "I've been neglecting you a bit, haven't I Ryo?", professor Asuka muttered before ruffling blond hair. Ryo accepted the gesture and smiled a bit to himself.

"No, it's alright father."

"Say, what about going to a pet store?", his father said with a grin, his smoke barely hanging on his outstretched lips.

A pet store? For a pet? Ryo pondered for a bit, deciding that he'd really like a pet to take care of at the moment.

8.

“For some reason, I can't help feeling... drawn to you, intertwined,” Akira muttered out, exhaustion heavy on his weak voice. Any other time, and oh, would that admission not have made them the happiest person (angel, traitor, murderer?) out there? Satan's bowels churned as vomit rose up, fighting it back, its vile aftertaste sweeter than the bitterness the angel felt in their stomach.

I–

He could not reply–

Satan choked on their sobs, as traitorous tears rolled down their cheeks, was a fallen angel even allowed to cry?

“I’d figured…no, I came to accept it just now. Despite it all, it won't change a single thing... not anymore, huh?” His voice trailed off, making the ache in Satan's heart resentfully more painful with every breath each of them managed to take.

9.

“I don't think I could bear to live alone again.”

Miki almost missed Akira’s voice, a whisper so soft that she could not believe her ears.

She was instantly concerned, what was troubling him?

“You are not alone, Akira,” she whispered back as she put her right hand on his shoulder, to reassure him. Or maybe it was to support herself, it had been months since the last time Akira was this…terrified. Months since that... incident, and his apparently long lost best friend coming back to Japan. "I won't let you be." She finished, sounding more self-assured and haughtily than she really felt.

“I know,” he said dryly, and continued after Miki worriedly looked at him, “I’m just afraid of losing you. And your family, they've been so good to me."

He couldn't come clean to her, about the nightmares he had, about her...

About Ryo...

10.

“Perhaps you’ll take me out one day, or do I have to make an appointment, Miss Parallels?” Miki said– mischievously?, as she handed her a lunch box.

Eva Maria stared at her, eyes wide and jaw impossibly firm, her eyelashes trembling as she quickly looked down after glancing at Makimura's offering hand.

“Hey, at least accept the food... didn't mean to scare you…” Miki quickly added as she shuffled nervously, voice deflating with every word, before deciding to sit next to her before it got too awkward.

Returning from her stupor, Eva Maria silently thanked her in a half bow and took the cute lunchbox.

“Excuse me...You just surprised me that's all, I expected you to eat with Akira as usual”

I didn't expect you would ever talk to me after I kidnapped you and used you as a bait, she had wanted to say. But couldn't, wouldn't ever, shame coloring her face red.

Miki grumbled beside her and opened her lunch box, placing the chopsticks loudly on the napkin. “Nah, that dork skipped school to go see his boy- uh, Ryo.” She laughed ashamedly, quickly catching herself as she tripped on the words that made her sound jealous when that wasn't her intention at all. Not when she had such a cute girl next to her.

Eva started eating as the other girl complained, idly listening to the cheeky tone of her voice, it was nice. The food was nice too, she smiled into her tamagoyaki as she bit into it, absentmindedly wondering about how making lunch boxes for friends might be what an average person their age does for friends.

She had wanted to be Miki Makimura's friend...

“Plus your company is much more delightful,” Makimura giggled as she put her arm around the blonde girl's shoulders.

Eva couldn't help but choke.

The brunette yelped and started hitting her back in a hurry, until Eva Maria coughed and signaled with her hands that everything was fine.

Had she misinterpreted Makimura's relationship with Akira? The thought of it made her nervous like never before, the fluttering in her belly completely new to someone like her.

Miki caught the girl next to her smiling shyly, which in turn made her grin as well, Eva was quite adorable after all.
